Our Process

Our process begins with hand selecting the best logs we can find, from companies that practice sustainable forestry. Foresters that understand how to properly manage woodlands for long term growth rather than a quick profit.

Alexander Designs works with trees that are near the end of their healthy lifecycle in local forests. While we are occasionally able to source other woods, Cherry and Soft Maple are the main species we work with, as they grow extremely well in our forests here in Northwest Pennsylvania. If trees are harvested while still healthy, all those years of growth and life pay off as high-quality material, rather than rotting on the forest floor.

We are thrilled to be part of properly managing forests and resources. It’s not a task we take lightly, it’s our duty to craft those materials into something that will not only wow our customers, their families, and friends, but will continue to stand the test of time, and honor the trees that our work comes from.

Our Why

This craft has allowed us to bring together a few of our passions… design, craftsmanship, and sharing food with family and friends. In our opinion, preparing a great meal is like creating a perfect bowl. In the kitchen, having world class ingredients isn’t enough, you need learned knowledge to make the most of those ingredients. How will those ingredients behave? How will they change if you add or take away various elements? That wealth of knowledge only comes with thousands of hours of practicing a craft, and never being satisfied with the results. At Alexander Designs we know there’s always a way to improve the product.

Technology has made it easier, faster, and cheaper to bring products to market, however, they have never been able to replicate the look and the feel of objects made by human hands. Perfectly imperfect objects that only thousands of hours of perfecting one’s craft can allow one to create; objects that still carry the warmth of the artisan’s hands that created them. Our goal is to create exceptionally designed functional art, work that is made to be used and loved for generations.

Most of us forget how special modern life really is. Not that long ago, food was scarce, and we couldn't run to the store and grab endless amounts of ready to consume food. Mealtime was a celebration of life; of the work it took to put food on the table. A time we spent with our families, thankful for the things we have rather than the never ending want for more. Our hope is that we can be a part of bringing this back. Helping people realize how wonderful it is to share that abundance with family and friends, to celebrate life and enjoy the time we have with each other.

We hope that you, your family, and friends, share and celebrate countless meals and memories together while using our finely crafted work as much as we enjoy making it.
